Gi Divisions and Weight Classes

Important note:

Competitors may weigh-in without gi tops.  Competitors will have until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday before the tournament to update registration information.  To avoid disqualification, we recommend that all competitors double check their weight before this date.

 

Required attire:

Clean gi in good repair. (No tears or excessive fraying)

Length of gi pants and jacket may not be more than 2 inches above the ankles and wrist respectively.

No cups/groin protectors.

Knee pads and mouth guard are optional.

~Be sure to note that a rash guard, sport bra (for women), or t-shirt MUST be worn under gi tops~

 

Gi Skill Levels for Children (5-9 years), Youth (10-12) & Juniors (13-17 years) 

As many academies use different belt color hierarchies for their young athletes, please use length of training time as a reference when choosing belt level.

White & Grey: <12 months
Yellow: 12-23 months
Orange: 24-35 months
Green Belt: >35 months

 

Gi Weight Classes 

Children, Youth, and Junior (ages 5-17) Weight Classes 

Children, youth and junior competitors will be asked to provide age at tournament time and  current weight when registering. Please be accurate and double check weight with gi pants only, as these numbers will help us to form the best brackets possible. Please avoid having children, youth, and juniors cut weight.

 

Children, youth, and Junior Gi Weight Divisions

(ages 5-12)

  • Up to 40.0 lbs.
  • 40.1 – 50.0 lbs.
  • 50.1 – 60.0 lbs.
  • 60.1 – 70.0 lbs.
  • 70.1 – 80.0 lbs.
  • 80.1 – 90.0 lbs.
  • 90.1 – 100.0 lbs.
  • 100.1 – 110.0 lbs.
  • 110.1 – 122.5 lbs.
  • 122.6 – 135.0 lbs.
  • 135.1 lbs. and over (may move to Junior division)

(ages 13-17)

  • Rooster: up – 118.0 lbs.
  • Light Feather: 118.1 – 129.0 lbs.
  • Feather: 129.1 – 141.5 lbs.
  • Light: 141.6 – 152.5 lbs.
  • Middle: 152.6 – 163.5 lbs.
  • Medium Heavy: 163.6 – 175.0 lbs.
  • Heavy: 175.1 – 186.0 lbs.
  • Super Heavy: 186.1 – 197.0 lbs.
  • Ultra Heavy: no maximum weight

*Please avoid having children, youth, and juniors cut weight.

 

Important update: After consulting with several coaches and our referees, we have decided to move all of the children’s divisions to the submission only format. Between the high level of instruction on your part and our referees attention to details and regards for safety, I believe the children will be safe with the submission only format. In order to gain as much experience as possible, these brackets will be run in the round robin format.
